Gaylord Resort and Convention Center - Chula Vista, California

Q. What is the Gaylord resort at Chula Vista?

A. The proposed Gaylord resort on the Chula Vista Bayfront would be a $1 billion waterfront hotel and convention destination that would serve local residents, boost the local economy, and jump start the long-awaited redevelopment of the Chula Vista waterfront in San Diego County.

The project is anticipated to have 2,000 guest rooms and suites at full build-out. In addition to hotel rooms and meeting space, the proposed Gaylord resort in Chula Vista would feature multiple restaurants, an entertainment nightclub, a full-service spa and fitness facility, numerous retail shops and resort swimming pools.

The state-of-the-art convention center will include approximately 400,000 square feet of meeting and convention space in the form of large ballrooms, flexible breakout space and exhibition space. No single meeting space will have more than 200,000 square feet to avoid competition with the San Diego Convention Center.

Q. How would the project benefit the local economy?

A. The Gaylord Chula Vista Resort represents a nearly $1 billion private investment in the local and regional economy. The project will benefit the local economy by providing much needed jobs and tens of millions of dollars in annual tax revenues, which will in turn help to fund essential city services including police and fire protection, parks, libraries and street improvements. This impact is significant, especially in light of the current economy.

Q. What type of job opportunities would be created by the project?

A. The project will create nearly 10,000 jobs during construction and approximately 3,000 permanent jobs (2,000 direct and 1,000 indirect) once the hotel is fully operational. Gaylord is an employer of choice in each of the markets in which it operates and has been named one of the “Top 25 Companies for Working Families” in Orlando, Florida, and one of the “Best Places to Work,” in both Dallas, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee.

Q. Would Gaylord use local labor to build the resort?

A. Gaylord is committed to hiring local workers and has a proven track record of doing so. On our new Gaylord National project near Washington, DC, approximately 90% of the workers/contractors were hired from the local region.

Q. How would the Gaylord Resort at Chula Vista affect the environment?

A. Gaylord is committed not only to being a good corporate citizen, but to being an environmentally conscious neighbor. Through smart design, we intend to incorporate many of the latest in green technologies and to achieve LEED certification, the “Good Housekeeping” seal of approval by the US Green Building Council. We are also listening to local environmental groups like the Audubon Society and designing the project to be sensitive to migratory birds and the surrounding natural environment. Over time, the project will contribute tax revenues needed to create, restore and protect nature and wildlife preserves around the once industrial Chula Vista bayfront.

Q. How did the project come about?
A. The City of Chula Vista worked to attract Gaylord Entertainment to build a resort hotel and convention center on its waterfront after learning of Gaylord’s interest in adding a West Coast presence to its national family of properties. After significant community involvement, the vision for the project was incorporated into the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan and endorsed by both the San Diego Unified Port District and the City of Chula Vista in 2005.

Q. What is the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan?

A. The proposed Gaylord resort in Chula Vista would serve as the centerpiece of the 560-acre Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan, a joint planning effort of the San Diego Unified Port District and the City of Chula Vista. The Master Plan calls for the transformation of the city’s former industrial waterfront to a world-class destination where people can live, work, play and visit -- a vision that has been dreamed of by local residents for more than 20 years. The proposed Gaylord resort in Chula Vista would help to make the revitalization of the bayfront a reality by providing the tax revenues needed to create public parks, nature and wildlife preserves, hiking and bike trails, and other recreational facilities.

Q. Where will the Gaylord resort be located?

A. The proposed Gaylord resort would be located on the bayfront in Chula Vista, California, San Diego County’s second largest city. The resort would be located west of Interstate 5 between E and H Streets, approximately 12 miles or 15 minutes south of the San Diego International Airport.

Q. How would the Chula Vista resort compare to other Gaylord hotels?

A. Gaylord’s flagship is the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. Other properties include Gaylord Palms, near Orlando, Florida; Gaylord Texan, near Dallas, Texas; and the new Gaylord National, outside Washington, DC.

The Chula Vista resort would be most similar to Gaylord National, the company’s newest property and the cornerstone of the 300-acre National Harbor waterfront resort on the Potomac River in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Each Gaylord resort is designed to be unique to its setting. The Chula Vista resort is expected to be the most environmentally sensitive facility in the Gaylord family of properties.

Q. When would the project be completed?

A. The vision for the project was incorporated into the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan and endorsed by both the San Diego Unified Port District and the City of Chula Vista in 2005. Since that time, the Port has been working to prepare the required environmental studies to gain approval for the Master Plan by various state agencies. Those approvals are expected by the end of 2009. Gaylord hopes to break ground in late-2010 for a grand opening in 2013.
